Silent Invader

The weather is getting colder, the holidays are fast approaching, cold and flu season has begun, and December comes and goes before you know it! With all that goes on in our busy lives, SecurTek would like to slow you down for a moment to review some important information on carbon monoxide.

When you think about carbon monoxide and how you might react to its presence in your home or business, keep in mind that planning should not follow how you might deal with the presence of smoke. While smoke can be detected by sight or smell, carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas that presents a danger to human life and the lives of our pets. It is estimated that carbon monoxide poisoning causes 200 deaths per year in Canada. Unfortunately, many of the physical symptoms of poisoning are similar to the flu or other common illnesses (headaches, weakness, nausea, vomiting) and are often attributed to a “bug” or virus. Prolonged exposure can lead tolack of consciousness and even death. Also, much like some strains of the flu, young children, the elderly and individuals with heart or respiratory issues are at a greater risk for adverse effects.

The “About Your House” General Series compiled by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/maho/yohoyohe/inaiqu/inaiqu_002.cfm) provides comprehensive information that you can share with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues to help make informed decisions on creating safe environments.

If you would like to add a carbon monoxide detector to your home or business and have it monitored 24/7 with your security system, contact your Authorized SecurTek Dealer or call our Customer Care Centre at 1-877-777-7590.

Holiday Wish for Emergency Responders

The holiday season is a very busy time for emergency response personnel, and in no way do we want to add to their responsibilities by dispatching on alarms that prove to be false. Please keep in mind that together, we can reduce the instances of false alarms and ensure that our emergency responders arrive at a scene where their help is really needed. Here are a few suggestions:

•   Show everyone in your home or business how to use your security system.

•   Your “keyholders” or “responsible parties” should know the password or passcode assigned to them in order for SecurTek to verify that they are acting per your wishes. Advise us of any people on your list who will be away at the same time you are, in order to avoid valuable contact time being wasted.

•   When changes occur with your keyholders or responsible parties (e.g. telephone number changes), contact SecurTek as soon as possible to ensure we have the most up-to-date information for responding to your instructions.

•   Try to provide more than one contact as your trusted keyholder or responsible party, and communicate clearly to SecurTek the order in which you would prefer to have them contacted in the event of an alarm.

•   If your business hours are modified for the holiday season, advise SecurTek of this temporary change from your normal schedule.

•   Contact SecurTek to give as much notice as possible when you will be going away. Provide the date and time you anticipate leaving, as well as the date and time of your expected return. If you have people periodically checking your home or business, provide their names to SecurTek and advise us whether or not they can act on your behalf if an emergency arises or repairs are needed. Remember, if you give them a key to your premises, you should additionally be providing them a password or passcode.

•   Enroll in SecurTek’s Enhanced Alarm Verification. Response will consist of contacting your premises once, then, if there is no answer, or if a password or passcode cannot be verified, we will call an alternate number to continue to try and verify if there is an emergency. If we cannot reach anyone on an alternate number, we will try the premises one more time before dispatching the appropriate response agency. For more information or to enroll in our Enhanced Alarm Verification program contact our Monitoring Centre.

•   Subscribe to one of the SecurTek Guard Service options that best reflects your needs. To find out more about our Guard Service Program visit www.securtek.com, contact our Customer Care Centre at 1-877-777-7590 or email customer.care@securtek.sk.ca.

SecurChek

More and more cities are adopting verified response policies or introducing bylaws to govern and charge for costs associated with emergency services responding to false alarms. SecurTek’s Guard Service program provides you three cost-effective options that comply with these policies and bylaws to assist with the reduction and even elimination of false alarms.

When the Monitoring Station dispatches the SecurTek Guard Service, a trained and uniformed guard is mobilized to attend your site and respond to the situation on your behalf. We are pleased to add a new layer to this service whereby you will feel as if you are virtually inspecting the site with the guard.

Starting in 2012, each of our Guard Service options will include SecurCheck, a new and innovative way to track response time and provide verification that a thorough inspection of your home or business has occurred. The responding guard will have a scanner that will be used to securely scan a barcode that has been placed at discreet points in and around your site. Each barcode must be registered before the guard can proceed. With each scan, information is uploaded to a secure website where you can view and print reports of these inspections. Your report will provide information detailing who your guard was, when they arrived on site and when the site check was completed.
